Position Description

Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed acute-care hospital classified as a stroke receiving center and level 2 trauma facility with an innovative, patient centered and evidence-based Rehabilitation Services Department. Our compassionate team provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement & spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, Telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, as well as outpatient therapy, hand and lymphedema clinics.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  1. The Clinical Educator (Professional Development Practitioner) is an experienced professional nurse who utilizes evidence-based practice for the achievement of organizational goals related to nursing education and professional development. The Clinical Educator serves in the following roles to guide the learner to desired organizational outcomes: learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, a champion for scientific inquiry, advocate for the nursing professional development specialty, and partner for practice transitions for nursing staff. The Clinical Educator possesses in-depth scientific knowledge, technical expertise, skill, and competence. Under the guidance of the Market Education Director, the Nursing Educator collaborates with facility/market nursing leadership and staff across departments to assess, plan, develop, implement, facilitate, evaluate and revise educational programming for all levels of nursing personnel and non-nursing personnel as indicated or requested. The educator acts as a key resource in the orientation and continuing education of nursing staff at Tenet Healthcare. The Nursing Educator implements a comprehensive education program for his/her assigned units while following and contributing to Tenet educational goals and vision. Educational programs typically include, but are not limited to orientation, continuing education and in-services. Other services may include, but are not limited to process, performance and service-delivery consultation and contributions to the organization through councils, committees and workgroups.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Design, Implementation, Facilitation, and Evaluation of Education/Educational Programs

  • Develops and coordinates new and existing employee orientation programs. Schedules new employees for required orientation components and monitors their progression.
  • Creates, reviews, and revises orientation pathways and competencies every calendar year and as needed.
  • Evaluates educational programs for effectiveness and impact.
  • Creates and provides educational and professional development opportunities that enhance empirical outcomes, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, transformational leadership, new knowledge, innovations, and improvements.
  • Evaluates and tracks programs and other educational/professional development offerings for sustained improvement and outcomes.
  • Facilitates learning needs assessment every calendar year and as needed for competency items that are new, changed, problematic, and high-risk/low-volume. Develops educational programs and/or competencies based on prioritized needs. Provides training reports to assist staff in achieving high completion rates for assigned departments.
  • Ensures educational activities are congruent with organizational pillars, mission, vision, values, and goals.
  • Provides didactic classes, self-study modules, and learning opportunities to staff members. Evaluates ongoing needs, competence, and post-education outcomes.
  • Implements a variety of teaching strategies tailored to the learner’s characteristics, learning needs, cultural perspectives, and outcome objectives.
  • Plans professional development programs that are culturally relevant and that incorporate concepts of multicultural and multigenerational education.
  • Creates, maintains, and reviews competencies for preceptors.
  • Uses complex patient care scenarios to develop critical thinking skills among the staff.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Collaborates with Nursing Directors and Managers to create educational content that meets department specific needs.
  • Provides guidance, educational support, and leadership throughout the organization.
  • Encourages staff to pursue higher education, certification, and attend/participate in professional development activities.
  • Models behaviors that reflect participation and leadership in activities within the organization, such as serving in key roles on committees, and councils.
  • Facilitates and supports Tenet RN Orientation and Residency Standardization.
  • Evaluations – Provides input with resident, preceptor, and new hire, evaluations as needed.
  • Assumes responsibility for projects and is self-directed in autonomously moving charge forward. Maintains awareness of personal limitations and seeks guidance or assistance as appropriate.
  • Supports lifelong learning in collaboration with academic institutions, healthcare organizations, professional nursing organizations, and other nursing professional development practitioners.

Quality and Performance Improvement

  • Collects data to assess needs for further learning.
  • Shares information with key stakeholders regarding necessary changes and/or compliance concerns. Works collaboratively to develop and implement process changes to achieve compliance.
  • Monitors performance improvement, creates, implements, measures, and monitors educational plans to meet performance and quality improvement needs and initiatives.
  • Facilitates andragogic sessions that align with regulatory, best practice, and evidence-based standards.
  • Participates in the development, education, and communication of policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Creates and implements training/educational programs focused on identified performance improvement and organizational initiatives.
  • Takes part in continued survey-readiness activities and provides education as appropriate.
  • Creates and implements education action plans based on survey findings (actual and readiness).
  • Integrates research into practice and develops staff members’ knowledge and skills in the research process; and, fosters the use of systematic evaluative research with regard to clinical and educational data.
  • Incorporates LEAN methodology into daily practice.
  • Models behaviors of an Innovator or Early Adopter on Roger’s Innovation Adoption Curve

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

Clinical Educator specializing in ICU and PCU

  1. Master’s Degree in Nursing; or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with current enrollment in a Master’s in Nursing program with scheduled graduation within 2 years of hire
  2. Current, unencumbered licensure to practice in the State of California
  3. Minimum of 2 years’ experience in teaching adult learners
  4. Minimum of 5 years recent clinical experience in the specialty for which the applicant desires to become educator
  5. Computer literacy including Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
  6. Exceptional relationship management skills and professional demeanor. Exemplifies elevated nursing practice, higher education, and professional growth and development.
  7. Understanding of adult learning principles and the ability to apply them in course instruction
  8. Understanding of change management principles. Ability to be a change agent by being a champion for change and participating in change processes
  9. Proven ability in critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, analytical/qualitative analysis, time management and priority setting
  10. Demonstrated ability to function both autonomously and collaboratively within a team
  11. Strong communication and leadership skills
  12. Ability to work flexible hours to meet education needs of all nursing staff (day, night, weekend shifts)
  13. Performs other relevant duties as assigned
  14. Maintains current knowledge regarding education and regulatory requirements
  15. BLS/ACLS provider status current at all times

Preferred:

  1. MSN-Education
  2. Previous experience as an educator or clinical instructor
  3. Open Heart/Cardiovascular ICU/Cardiothoracic ICU experience (within the past 5 years)
  4. Previous experience in Level I or II Trauma Center and Primary/Comprehensive Stroke Center
  5. Previous experience with shared governance models
  6. Certification in specialty (e.g., CCRN, CEN, CMSRN, CNOR, etc.) nursing education (CNE), or nursing professional development (NPD-BC)
  7. Active membership in relevant professional organization

Physical Requirements

  • Lift/position up to 25 lbs. Push/pull up to 25 lbs of force.
  • Frequent sitting. Moderate standing, walking, reaching, stooping, and bending
  • Manual dexterity, mobility, touch, auditory to perform all the related duties of the position
  • Adequate vocal pitch and volume
  • Sufficient perceptive acuity (vision and hearing) to perform all the related duties of the position

Working Conditions

Occasional pressure due to calls, classes and projects

Pay range: $60.44 - $92.85 hourly

**Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience
